I study English literature and read too much. Concise reviews of the ridiculous miscellany of my reading choices. Sometimes also things I watch and listen to. But mostly read.

The Circle by Dave Eggers
First of all, I have explain that I had to read this for class. I would never in a million years have chosen to read something like this. I have never read anything with less literary merit. I didn't even know that anything this idiotic could be written. It's roughly on the intellectual level of a ten-year-old. The plot is an extremely generic and simplified sci-fi plot with so badly thought out that it would probably be more accurate to call it all one large hole. To call the characters two-dimensional would be too generous, they have half a dimension at most. From the dialogue, I doubt the author has ever actually heard people speak as he tries pathetically hard to be 'cool'. Everything is just so deplorably fake. Loved how the author made sure to include non-white and gay characters, but only as background ones, I could almost see him checking 'minorities' off a list, while all the main characters are very white and very straight. I am extremely puzzled by why so many of the reviews call it 'satirical' or 'witty'. The only funny thing about this book is that writing that bad actually exists.
