The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

This was one of the texts I had to read for class this year, and I had only read it once before, at the age of about fifteen. I think I might have a hernia from how hard I laughed. I tried to read this on the Tube, but had to stop because I was unable to contain myself. This is basically the most brilliant, hilarious play in the universe and I actually look forward to reading it again in a few years, because I'm sure that I will find it even funnier, there are probably layers of cultural meaning that I might one day be more aware of. Wilde's wit is so sharp that it can most definitely be used to cut diamonds. I do think that not all the acts are equally good (the third act is a little lacking), but it's the perfect combination of hilarious, perceptive, and deeply critical. I really wanted to write a paper on it, but felt I wasn't worthy. I can't even look at muffins anymore without bursting into laughter. (Caution: DO NOT watch the deplorable 2002 film, they fuck everything up and somehow manage to make it as dull as mud. Oscar Wilde probably not merely turned in his grave but screamed and kicked in it. Actually I'm surprised he didn't rise up to destroy everyone involved)
